this hour. hilliard is just outside of columbus. now, frankly county went 59% for obama in 2008. but the gop is putting up a fight here. now, the president has three stops in ohio today. he'll stay here tomorrow in the morning. mitt romney has two, plus the stop in wisconsin. and just by looking at the candidate's itineraries, it tells you b a lot about just how important they think this state is. it's going to be an all-out fight for ohio's 18 electoral votes. it's worth repeating. no republican has ever won the presidency without ohio. just this morning, there was a better than expected jobs report. while the unemployment rate picked up to 7.9%, 171,000 jobs were created. that beats estimates by a strong margin. now, here in ohio, the unemployment rate is lower than the national average. it is 7%. late yesterday, i visited both the romney and obama campaign headquarters in columbus. when i asked people why they're giving their time and what people they're talking to are telling them, the economy is still the central issue in this campaign. >> i think the economy is not doing well and i thi

what working uniform patrol in the broadway corridor of columbus and broadway, officers were summoned. did the to and ask for their assistance in obtaining a subject that appeared to be acting suspicious, and was possibly wanted for criminal act. officers approached the subject. as they did so, they noticed he was rolling a marijuana cigarette in his hand. officer tapang remove the cigarette from the man's hand. his immediate response was to flee from officers. saturday night on broadway is pure chaos at 2:00 in the morning. hundreds of people leaving the nightclubs. these officers are chasing this person down the crowded street. as the chase went on for a few yards, but the suspect reached underneath his jacket. he withdrew a tech 9 automatic pistol. he was running down broadway and took the weapon and he there to scare the officer, and pointed the pistol right at officer. officer jones, seeing the threat to the officer and everyone else nearby, fired a shot to protect an officer. almost immediately after that, officer tapang was able to catch up with the suspect and wrestle him to t

% of the vote. cleveland, columbus, here in sena cincinnati. a growing latino population. the president starts with a head start. the white vote, 44% to 53% for romney. i would say this. if governor romney can keep the white vote closer to 40%, he has a chance and getting minority turnout, that was the president's recipe for success four years ago. >> i know that is so crucial when you look at ohio, what do you see there? >> the reason, it has -- you look at a couple of different places. the north of the state. cleveland, over to toledo. a place where we think we see evidence the auto bailout is helping. across the industrial north. that means a lot of blew collar white voters supporting the president. then you come here to the southwest corner of the state. cincinnati is in hamilton county. it was blue four years ago. the state including cincinnati, 52% for the republican ticket, 47% for president obama. mitt romney -- it's a classic swing state, both campaigns essentially getting what they need where they need it. who can turn out the vote. >> and turn out the vote comes down to the ground g

now headed to republican territory in that state. the stop is in lima outside of columbus. his third event of the day in a county that senator john mccain won in 2008 with 60% of the vote. kristen welker is traveling with the president. she joins us now. as i mentioned, lima, 60% of that vote went to john mccain. is the president tailoring his message different than what we heard today, kristen? >> reporter: good afternoon, tamron. i think we will hear a similar message in lima we heard during the president's first two stops today. he's talking about the fact he had improvements and the latest unemployment report to make that argument, but he's really focusing on the auto bailout, the auto industry specifically slamming mitt romney for his recent claims that jeep is shipping jobs to china. the president said the companies themselves have told governor romney to knock it off. it's worth noting that papers in this area have come out and said that those claims are false. the romney campaign continues to stand by their ad that says the auto bailout will lead it to shipping jobs overseas.

that columbus area. guest: columbus the state capital is where the ohio state is, that has become the key swing area of the state. it is growing. it has younger voters. it is a fluent. it is in an area that the previous bush's had one. but president obama made it flipped and took it by several percentage points. i think you are seeing a lot of attention in going there. this weekend, president obama will be finishing topping off his ohio campaigning in central ohio. in the past tv of cycles, we have seen the democratic candidate come up in northeast ohio and try to make that pushed. i think he is comfortable with the get out to vote efforts. he ought to go down -- he has to appeal to the swing areas. more independent voters. and you had this educated, affluent group, the base around ohio state university. and that has been critical. in the end, if you show that map, ohio is broken up, we have said it for years into 5 ohios. those five areas, plus some of the border areas, we have about seven media markets. it makes a very expensive to campaign here. in gubernatorial races and some presidential r

is right here in columbus, ohio. where they have had a few. i will not say a gaggle of them, but quite a few. and then i heard you earlier on the dollar fight workers, that you and senator brown -- on the delphi workers. you were interviewing the delphi workers. they say they have no pension are not getting any pension. this spin sounds like it is coming from you there a little bit. host: tim ryan? guest: it is a tough situation with the delphi salary folks. we have been working on it along time. my former coach's and family members who were in that group -- i am not here to spend anything, i am here to help them. it was a bankruptcy, a tough deal. but most of those pensions have gone to the pbgc. where they are getting pension money. they may not be getting all of their pension money, but they -- some are getting all. most are betting almost all. we do not have those exact numbers, but we want to find those. they are getting -- that does not diminish the suffering of these families. the economic impact it is having an our community. this is not a political football to score political

, just outside of columbus. so we know that he'll be addressing those jobs numbers. the big complication for him would be if the numbers were worse than expected. especially if they tick up to 8%, because that was an important sort of mental hurdle that the country cleared last month. and then for mitt romney, obviously, the complication would be if they're better than expected, because he's been making the argument that this economic recovery is not on the right path. and also, that it's not happening quickly enough. we're not really expecting the messages from these two candidates to deviate. and the other thing you have to consider is, we're in ohio. this is where the election could hinge. and one of the factors in the political landscape here has been that the unemployment rate is significantly lower than the national average. 7% here. so you could argue that barring some dramatic swing from what is expected, that it may not really matter. it may be continuing to be a lot about the auto bailout, which president obama supported, and which he's going to be touting here today in this ev
